Eric Skansgaard: A Gentle Giant has Fallen

Donation protected

Eric Skansgaard, a husband, father, papa, and mentor with a servants heart.  Eric loved his family, was an artist, a beautiful musician, and appreciated the simplistic beauty in life.   p>Eric was passionate about helping people in the communities where he has lived,  loved, and worked in. He would never turn a person who needed help away. He was a community liaison where his passion was to connect all agencies and build relationships to better serve the community and it’s citizens.

This gentle giant has fallen. His death shines alight on the importance of burn out, taking one serious when they reach out for help without repercussions, and having a safe place for people to be acknowledged when they do ask for help, especially those who are first responders.  Eric and his team were the ones to respond to crisis situations like this and debrief the families and professionals. There will be a huge void in every life Eric has touched.  Eric was the Regional Director for Catholic Charities where he worked for approximately 5 years. He supervised the Crisis Team, which is in charge of responding to mental health crises and involuntary detentions. As part of that role he was often collaborating with Central Washington Hospitals Medical Unit 1 team on people that were voluntarily or involuntarily detained as well as assisting in the court process related to their detention. He also spearheaded the Trueblood Diversion Team, which worked closely with the people post-arrest, the jails and the courts to assist with re-entry back into the community with the necessary supports due to having a mental health and/or substance abuse issue, which could have been prevented had they been engaged in services. Part of this work includes community integration where mental health workers collaborate with Law Enforcement in the field to assist with de-escalating crises that can be avoided or having someone work as the liaison between law enforcement and the person with mental health issues.
